See Differently. Then Be Differently.
You can't rewrite a story you can't see.
I used to think change started with doing something different.
Say the boundary. Take the rest. Stop absorbing, and assuming responsibility, for others moods.
I did the doing. And for a while it worked, right up until it didn’t. Stress cropped up, or someone I loved pulled back and expressed disappointment, and the old pattern took the wheel again like it had never left the driver’s seat.
It hadn’t left. I’d covered it with a performance of change, not change itself.
Here’s what I know now that I didn’t know then: you cannot BE differently until you SEE differently.
Every experience gets filtered through a lens first. Then it becomes a thought. Then a feeling. Then a choice. Then an action. Most coaching, most self-help, starts at the action end. New habit, new routine, new discipline, more willpower.
That’s working against the current.
The lens generating the old behavior is still fully intact, so the new behavior has to be maintained by force. That’s why it collapses the moment life gets messy.
Real change starts further upstream. At the lens. At perception.
This is why Recognize comes before anything else in the work I do. Not Rewrite. Not Rewire. Not Retrain. Recognize. You cannot rewrite a story you don’t know you’re telling.
You cannot loosen a belief you’ve mistaken for reality.
M.U.D. (misguided unconscious decisions) hides inside perception on purpose. It operates at the level of what you see, generating a distorted lens that feels like plain fact. That’s the trick. It doesn’t feel like a belief. It feels like the world.
The moment perception shifts, even slightly, everything downstream moves without being forced. New thoughts show up because the soil changed. The old behavior stops requiring maintenance, because it was never really yours to begin with.
That’s the difference between a person gritting their teeth through a boundary and a person who simply, finally, says the true thing without the old vote in their head.
